Timeline of Events

The Wade-in's, led by Dr. Gilbert R. began the opening salvo in a seies of Mississippi Gulf Coast wade-in's and law suits.

- first time successfully challenged the stats segregation laws.

Life of Gilbert R. Mason
1928- Octobert 7 Gilbert. R Mason was born in Jackson,Mississippi

1945- Mason graduated from Lanier high school- dreamed of becoming a Doctor

1949- earned his B.S. degree from Tennesse state University

1954- earned his MD from Howard Medical school.

1954- Residency at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis,Missouri.

1955- Moved to Biloxi, MS along with his wife and new born and began his practice.

1959- May 14 - Led the first Wade-in on Biloxi's "white only" Federally funded 26 mile beach.

1960- April 20, 1960 the bloodiest wade-in took place and a lawsuit was soon filed after marking. First time a segregation type of lawsuit was filed in U.S. History.
